Research Partners
Fisheries and Oceans Canada
The CSA and Wild Canadian Sablefish have collaborated with scientists and managers with Fisheries and Oceans Canada in co-management of the BC Sablefish fishery for over 30 years. Sablefish harvesters see the long-term benefit of sustainable fishing practices and actively engage the Canadian government in a formal collaborative agreement to support decision-making based on the requirements of the DFO Sustainable Fisheries Framework policy, the Fisheries Act, and the commercial integrated groundfish fishery. Our activities include collaboration on collecting annual stock and fishery monitoring data, stock assessment, management strategy evaluation and advising DFO on harvest decisions and management practices.
Landmark Fisheries Research
The CSA and Wild Canadian Sablefish partners with Landmark Fisheries Research to close the gap between the theory and practice of precautionary fisheries management. Landmark provides industry-leading analytical expertise in fisheries management science to our Management Strategy Evaluation process and to our research on gear interactions with habitat.

Interface Fisheries Consulting Ltd. provides research and development planning to guide the Canadian Sablefish Association’s investments in science. Bringing over 35 years of experience to our research, Interface brings the expertise required to link our research to sustainable use practices that meet and exceed the requirements of Canada’s fisheries policy.
Sustainable Seafood Resources
Various organizations provide information for consumers to make informed choices about the seafood they buy. Sablefish is consistently listed as a recommended choice. Check out the resources below to find out more.
Seafood Watch
The Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program helps consumers and businesses make choices for healthy oceans. Our recommendations indicate which seafood items are “Best Choices,” “Good Alternatives,” and which ones you should “Avoid.” Seafood Watch recommendations are science-based, peer reviewed, and use ecosystem-based criteria. Wild Canadian Sablefish is proud to be a Seafood Watch “Best Choice”.
SeaChoice
Sustainable Seafood Canada is a coalition of leading Canadian conservation organizations working together via the SeaChoice program to raise public awareness of the threats to our oceans and the solutions that sustainable fisheries offer. Seachoice is about solutions for healthy oceans. Launched in 2006, SeaChoice was created to help Canadian businesses and shoppers take an active role in supporting sustainable fisheries and aquaculture at all levels of the seafood supply chain. Based on scientific assessments, SeaChoice has created easy-to-use tools that help you make the best seafood choices.
Ocean Wise
Ocean Wise is a Vancouver Aquarium conservation program created to educate and empower consumers about the issues surrounding sustainable seafood. Ocean Wise works directly with restaurants, markets, food services and suppliers ensuring that they have the most current scientific information regarding seafood and helping them make ocean-friendly buying decisions. Wild Canadian Sablefish is an “Ocean Wise Recommended” species.
CFOOD
International experts in fisheries management have come together as part of a new initiative, called CFOOD (Collaborative for Food from Our Oceans Data.) The coalition will gather data from around the world and maintain fisheries databases while ensuring seafood sustainability discussions in the media reflect ground-truth science.
